Ok time to come clean, Hawaii doesn't see a four season change. Probably not "news" but hey, what really is these days? Having been plopped on the planet about 21 degrees above the equator, it's no secret that the weather in Hawaii is pretty darn good. While the seasons in Hawaii are a little less dramatic, they do change.
The indicators aren't the forests of colorful leaves or frost on the grass but there are signs. One of the big ones is the change in the surf around our island home. During this season it begins to change going from a southerly summer swell to a cooler northern one.
As the winter months approach, the surf arrives to our in islands from storms in the north Pacific. This is the source of our famous "North Shore Surf" that bring monster waves and top notch surfers to the islands. Those same storms also bring life giving rain to Hawaii, between Dec and April, without which, we would not have drinking water.
Our hot, sunny, cloudless skies of summer end in mid to late October. This is the arrival of the winter season in Hawaii. During this time you'll see amazing rainbows created by passing clouds, dropping showers in the path of a lower hanging winter sun. October to November mark the arrival of the Humpback Whales and shorter days. While we still have about 12 hours of daylight, it does drop by about 1 hour from summer. Our temperatures drop about 10 degrees Fahrenheit to the mid 70's at night and mid 80's most days.
As summer slips into fall believe us, the locals feel the change of even a few degrees.
We know that most seasoned winter folks would say, "thats not that cold", which is technically true. However, temperature in a place like Hawaii is marked with subtle changes, which can be seen in what the locals are wearing.
If you can't tell it's winter by our obvious lack of snow on the beach, don't worry just look around you for locals wearing sweatshirts or heavy jackets with shorts or jeans & socks in our slippahs.
Even though we may be cold, we do welcome the winter months. These months mean families and couples will be gathering in Hawaii from around the world. They'll be celebrating reunions from, simple vacations to weddings, honeymoons, engagements or just to thaw out for a little while.
Whatever the reason, memorable moments will be made and we would like to help you share them forever with our 50% off package specials. - Video Info

]]>Choosing the perfect spot for your Hawaiian photographs is no easy task. Hardly an inch of the island chain falls short of dazzling, so when it comes time to choose just one location for the backdrop of your maternity photographs, family portraits, or wedding photographs in Hawaii, you might find yourself overwhelmed by options!
Luckily, the islands are full of colorful friendly locals, who can help you narrow down your choices. Begin your hunt for the best photo locations in Hawaii by consulting these people:
1.Hawaii tourist agencies and online trip advisors
Inside a tourist agency or trip advisory website, you will find a team of friendly experts on Hawaii’s hidden gems. This group will be able to suggest plenty of leads. They can tell you where the sugar sand beaches are and where waves crash over black, volcanic rock. They can refer you to lush botanical gardens or tell you where you’ll have a great view of the Hawaiian sunset. Browse these sites to get an idea of what Hawaii has to offer before you arrive: Hawaii.com, Tripadvisor.com, lonelyplanet.com.
While tourist agencies might have some great ideas or maybe even been to the locations they recommend, they aren’t experts in photography, portrait, wedding or otherwise. Make sure you follow up on their leads to verify that a location would be practical for photography with a local Hawaii based photographer.
2.Photographers in Hawaii
Your Hawaiian photographer should be your number one, go-to resource for planning your Hawaiian photography session. Experienced photographers in Hawaii have been spearheading the quest for beautiful photography locations for years. They are likely to have a list of their own favorite locations, which they can recommend to you for your wedding photographs or family portraits which are stunning, secluded and beautiful.
In addition to knowing where beauty lies, Your photographers also know what locations work best in terms of lighting, accessibility, and crowd-control. From the seasonal changes of the sunset and waves to the rainy and sunny times, your photographer is your best resource when it comes to choosing your location!
3.Don't deny your eye....
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, at the end of the day, your maternity photos, family portraits, or wedding pictures deserve a choice that you make after evaluating from all the information about locations to the style and scenery. Choose a photographer that is diverse in their ability to cover different locations, lighting and seasonal situations. After all this may be your one and only trip to the islands and that one image could be the one you keep forever.
Try to have a clear vision of what you you want before you choose a location. Do you picture yourself and your groom standing on a volcanic rock, with waves crashing dramatically behind you? Or are you hoping to catch some candid cuties of your children playing in the sand? Whatever you envision as the backdrop of your photographs in Hawaii, don’t settle for less. You can find a location that matches up with your vision. Now that you’ve narrowed down the list of possible locations, with input from a Hawaiian photographer and from your own mind’s eye, whittle that list down one by searching for a place that meets these criteria:
1.Minimal tourist traffic
Nothing is more disruptive than a tourist, in a bright Hawaiian shirt, meandering their way through the background of your photos. Your photos are all about you and your loved ones. Scout out a place with some privacy, so that you and Hawaii will be the focus of your photos. If you really must shoot your photos at a popular location, find out when the peak hours are and avoid them!
2.Clear horizon
The tropical sunset is one of the most iconic images to come out of Hawaii, and as all Hawaiian wedding photographers know, the lighting is ideal for silhouette portraiture. If you want to make your mark on a Hawaiian sunset, make sure that you choose a location with a clear view of the horizon. A couple of palm trees are gorgeous, but more foliage than that looks cluttered.
3.Vibrant color contrast
Hawaii is known for tropical colors that popping out of every corner. For your photographs, choose a location that plays up this magical aspect of island life. The beaches on the east side of the island are known for the high contrast between white sand and brilliantly blue water.
4. Simple
As stunning as Hawaii is, you have to be careful that the island’s beauty doesn’t steal the focus away from you and your loved ones in your Hawaiian photographs.
A bare beach, with a bit of fluffy white surf at the shore’s edge, will emphasize the subjects of your photographs, rather than distracting from them. If you do fancy a lush, jungle scene in the background of your photos, try to find foliage that is all a similar shade of green.
5.Convenient and accessible to the public
Spending time on an archipelago has many charms, but extensive travel on an island can be a bit of a nuisance. You’ll be less stressed (and have brighter smiles!) if you are able to set up your photography session close to your lodgings. This is doubly true if you’ve chosen to get family photography in Hawaii, as the smaller members of your family can complicate travel, or if you’re having wedding photos made, as you will be occupied with all the other details of your big day.
Don’t forget to double check that the location you choose for your Hawaiian photos is publicly accessible. Many unmarked stretches of beach belong to resorts. You wouldn’t want an employee to shoo you away in the middle of your photo session! When you think you’ve got the perfect location nailed down, touch base one last time with your Hawaiian photographer. They can warn you of any complications involved in your choice, or give you tips for what to bring and wear to make the most of your beautiful spot!
]]>Sparkling sands and rich sunsets lure thousands of brides, each year, to Hawaii’s shores. The brides, in turn, have lured a huge net full of wedding photographers to the islands.
When you decide to say “I do” on any of Hawaii’s tropical islands, from dazzling Oahu to relaxing Maui, you will have no shortage of wedding photographers to choose between. You can narrow the pool by studying the photographers’ packages, pricing, portfolios, and blogs, but don’t make a final decision until you’ve actually spoken to your favorite candidates. Interview your Hawaii based photographer beforehand, and fish out additional, essential information with these questions:
1) Can you describe your style?
You want to make sure that your wedding photographer’s eye aligns with your vision of a wedding in Hawaii. If you imagine a soft, seaside fairytale, you might not get the best results from a photographer who describes his style as “retro, rockabilly.” Of course, a solid professional photographer will be able to adapt their technique to many different styles. A good follow-up question might be, “Have you ever worked on a wedding with my style?” That photographer with a personal fetish for the 1950s, might be able to show you dreamy pictures they’ve taken from a wedding that matches your style.
2)Does editing have an additional charge?
Let’s be real: everyone has wondered, at some point in their life, how they would look if they were given the same beauty treatment and photo editing as the models who grace the pages of magazines. Your wedding photos are an opportunity to find out!
Professional photographers are not only skilled at snapping shots, some are also skilled at editing those photos into works of art. They know how to retouch and color balance your photos, so that your skin is as smooth as a pearl and your dress is still brilliantly white, against that tropical orange sunset.
Most Professionals wish to put their best foot forward and will include basic edits as part of the image selection and presentation of proof to the brides. If your photographer tells you that they will be happy to just give you the card right out of their camera, beware. They will not be editing these photos so ask if editing comes at an additional cost. You will definitely want to have your photos edited, so if there is an additional cost, especially for something as important as stellar wedding photos, you need to know to include it in your budget.
3)How many weddings have you photographed?
Experience is one of the best indicators of a wedding photographer’s quality. If the photographer has shot less than 10 weddings, there is cause for some apprehension. However, if you see photos from their previous gigs, and you are wowed by their work, you might still give them the job. After all, everyone has to start somewhere!
An important follow-up question here is “how many weddings do you shoot per week, month or year?” Any experienced Wedding photographer can tell you what their average wedding count is per year. Because Hawaii is a huge wedding destination, photographers can be slammed, especially during peak wedding seasons. You want to verify that your photographer will have room for you in their schedule.
4)Do you carry liability insurance?
Ok This might seem like kind of a personal question, and honestly it would be if you weren't hiring someone to do your wedding at a large hotel that requires your photographer to carry such a policy. Can you honestly think of a worse scenario than arriving at your hotel on your wedding day only to find out that your photographer couldn't come on the property because they didn't have an insurance policy that covered them being there?
5)Do you have a back-up photographer?
Wedding photographers while awesome are not superheros. They can get sick or have a family crisis, just like anyone else. Unfortunately, when a wedding photographer has to take a day off work, the consequences can be disastrous for his clients.
Most photographers will have a second gun, before you choose your wedding photographer, ask this question. If they don’t work with a back-up photographer and you really want to use them, try to arrange a second person of your own. You don’t want to be stranded at the altar without anyone to capture the magic of that moment!
6)Can you recommend a videographer?
Photos make great mantle-pieces and coffee table books, but on days when you are feeling truly nostalgic for the sound of your newlywed laughter and the way that the tiki lights danced in the Hawaiian breeze, a video is the only cure!
As you interview wedding photographers in Hawaii, inquire about videographers as well. If your photographer has a videographer with whom he regularly works, coordination will be smoother, and your finished products will complement each other perfectly.
7)Do you travel between islands?
Island-hopping may seem charming to honeymooners, but for a Hawaiian wedding photographer who has to transport expensive, bulky equipment between gigs, the novelty quickly loses its luster. Let your photographer know where you’re planning on getting married and double check that they are willing to work with your choice of the islands. A good follow up question would be “Which island are you based on?” A photographer who is based near your wedding will be less stressed and less rushed and less expensive, since flying is the only option to an outer island. Oahu is the most populated island and home-base for most photography businesses.
8)What restrictions do you have about sharing photos online?
The first thing you’re going to want to do, when you see your wedding photos, is share them with the people you love. For most of us, that means uploading the photos to Facebook or Instagram or another social media site.
Unfortunately, photo rights can be a bit intricate. Most professional photographers take ownership over their work and impose restrictions about how you can share their photos. Remember, the photos are their source of livelihood. If you’re giving away photos for free, they won’t be in business very long. Ask if they offer a release or even special pricing for printing their images through the photographer's pro lab, where you will receive better quality than your brand X photolab.
Bonus....Do you follow a shot list?
There are a number of iconic images in every wedding album: the groom’s reaction to seeing his bride for the first time, the first kiss, the guests tossing rice or holding sparklers above the newlywed couple, as they depart. These images form what’s called a “shot list.” Basically, it’s a photographer’s must-have photos.
Seasoned professional wedding photographers already have a well oiled list of shots they do for weddings. What you will want to offer up is those unknown shots that are unique to your wedding. Make a list your wedding photographer in Hawaii needs to be prepared to see, for instance; there might be a surprise out of town guests, or a Chinese Lion Dance, maybe there will be a special Hula performed for the Groom by the Bride.
Ask your photographer what’s on their “shot list.” And you might also suggest a few additions or omissions to tighten up your specific needs.
Remember these 8 questions to ask when you are searching for your Hawaiian Wedding Photographer, they should not only have solid answers for you about these questions but be confident in their answers and ability to relate to you asking them questions. Trusting your wedding photographer in Hawaii is paramount to the success of your event. Don't settle for 1/2 answers or " I don't know, nobody has ever asked me that before" answers. Be sure that you are dealing with a pro and you will come away with images to last a lifetime.

Every once in a while you are lucky enough to be a part of something truly special. This is exactly what happened to us at Hawaiianpix in July. It all started like many of our portrait sessions, when a proud bride called our office. She wanted us to photograph her and her husband for their 30th anniversary, during their time on Oahu.
We were so pleased not only to be able to photograph Therese and Stanley but to get to know them during our time together. After meeting the two of them the reasons why they've had such a successful marriage were obvious to us. That's why when Therese was gracious enough to share her view on how they've made it for so long, we just had to share it with our clients, past, present and future.
"It is difficult to put into words what the essence of being in a relationship with someone who you love and cherish for thirty years is all about... it is, something that has to be experienced. Fewer and fewer individuals are able to live this reality due to the nature of our world. Mutual respect, genuine acceptance, acknowledgment for each other and allowing one another the space to grow are a few of the key components that nurture this type of relationship to fruition. Contentment for familiarity is also a part of the equation; however, lackadaisical attention to ones' self can make this reality difficult at best.
Meeting with Jerry to take our pictures for our 30th wedding anniversary was a wonderful experience. He made us feel so comfortable, as if we had known him for a long time. Sharing special moments with others helps to keep us grounded in our beliefs, dreams and goals. Capturing the essence of a lifetime of experiences takes an expert, such as Jerry! Thank you so much Hawaiianpix for capturing our special moment!"
Stanley & Therese Kanai
From the bottom of our hearts Therese and Stanley, Mahalo! You two are an inspiration, we are honored to have been a part of such a special occasion and can’t thank you enough for sharing your insights into marriage longevity with our clients.

If a destination wedding in Hawaii sounds too good to be true, don’t worry! It’s not. Hawaii is home to 20,000 weddings a year—and that’s not due to a local tradition of tying, un-tying, and re-tying the knot multiple times per year! Most Hawaiian weddings are planned by non-local brides, just like you. In years to come, as these brides flip through their wedding photo albums, they all agree on one thing: the extra work of planning a destination wedding was worthwhile.
So, what challenges are you up against?
The photos of your Hawaiian wedding may be all sunshine and tropical breeze, but some aspects of planning a destination wedding are anything but a breeze.
Here are some of the challenges that your wedding photos won’t reveal:
What are the solutions?
Don’t let yourself be too intimidated by the challenges above! Remember, over 20,000 weddings take place in Hawaii each year, and your wedding can too! Be persistent in your communication with vendors and venues, and stick to your planning timeline.
Here are the solutions to your challenges:
What makes Hawaii worthwhile?
For many couples, vacationing in Hawaii is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Multiply that once-in-a-lifetime vacation times your once-in-a-lifetime wedding day, and you will begin to understand the magic of a destination wedding in Hawaii.
Hawaii’s booming wedding industry is also a jewel for you, as a bride to be. The islands are teeming with wedding venues, caterers, dress stores, cake designers, honeymoon resorts, and photographers. When you hire local services, you will receive the insight of both a native islander and a wedding industry leader. For example, when you hire a Hawaiian wedding photographer, you hire a professional who knows all Hawaii’s hidden pockets of beauty, how to take a picture of your dress melting into the sea foam, how to capture the rich gold of a Hawaiian sunset bathing your skin, and how to immortalize the effect of the bright, Hawaiian spirit in each of your guests’ smiles.
Choosing Hawaii for a destination wedding is truly one of the most rewarding decisions you can make for your special day!
]]>Hawaii is one of the best wedding locations in the world. Whether you’re looking to have a traditional or a modern wedding, Hawaii provides the perfect modern wedding scenery. From Boho to Elegant today's wedding in Hawaii has it all. Recording that wedding in the style and feel you are looking for requires a knowledgeable professional photographer. Wedding photography is an art that is a collaboration between the couple and their photographer. The couple brings the ideas and style request and the modern wedding photographer brings the vision of their wedding to life. They employ their talent, experience and expertise for your benefit. Immortalize the greatest event in your life with modern wedding photography in Hawaii from the best photographers in Honolulu.
There are two common types of modern weddings frequently celebrated around the US and in Hawaii. Most young couples dream of leaving their mark with their special event, and that’s why they choose to do either a modern elegant or DIY, BOHO style wedding. We are going to compare the two and you will find they aren't all that different when it comes to how they are put together.
Destination couples who decide to get married in Hawaii, opt for smaller scale weddings, with around 30 to 50 guests. While weddings held for local families can include hundreds of guests. Either way communicating your specific style of wedding to your photographer will help them to grasp the feel, colors, scale and lighting needed to achieve your ideal wedding.
Whatever you may consider important for your modern wedding in Hawaii, think of quality photography as an inherent condition. Regardless of the type of wedding you'll only want to hire a true masters of wedding photography. A skilled and seasoned wedding professional who knows Hawaii.
In this article, we’ll discuss both types of modern weddings, elegant and intimate as well as simple and BOHO. We'll explore why you need to seriously take your professional photographer into account with both styles and why.
A guide to modern weddings in Hawaii
Setting your priorities straight helps a lot. If you’re looking for a modern, DIY wedding in Hawaii, it means you won’t have the help of an event planner and you’ll have to do all the financial planning, flowers, invitations, table favors, and maybe even the dress, yourself. Certainly a great financial choice if you have the time.
If your dream wedding means an elegant and high end event for just a few close friends and family, you’ll probably be spending more on the venue to accommodate such an illustrious guest list. The who’s who of your family and friends. You’ll dress to impress and need to have a solid planner to assist you with your location, flowers, transportation and of course the location. The area around Honolulu can provide you with a lot of magical places for you to have your perfect wedding. From four and 5 star hotels to intimate and classic Churches and Gardens.
The same goes for an modern elegant wedding: you can get together with the whole gang and let everyone contribute with modern ideas. Shopping is a must, with some of the worlds’ elite clothing and accessory stores right here on Oahu, you can find nearly any hand bag, bridal gift or that special wedding night gown that you are looking for.
The modern approach consists of having most of these sent via e-mail, so you can spend your budget on other things, which are more worthy to be photographed and remembered.
The typical low-key Hawaiian wedding allows couples to totally disregard name cards and seating arrangements. Who needs that when everybody knows each other?
One of the biggest mistakes we see in modern weddings is, when couples don't properly adorn their environment, because they believe the Hawaii scenery is enough. While amazing, your wedding day is about so much more, dress it up a little. Take into account the photography side of things, the scenery is only the backdrop to your day. It's those small personal touches that make your wedding day unique and they will be the things that bring back the memories 10 years after you say I do.
So try to imagine your wedding as a photographer:
do the colors compliment each other? Is the flower arrangement photography-ready? What time of day did you choose for your wedding and how does it match with your outfits?
What about the weather? The seasons in Hawaii change dramatically from summer to winter.... believe it or not.
For instance, depending on which side of the island you are on you may see sunshine all day or be rained on.
Winter months tend to be wet and windy, you will want to avoid the north and eastern shores of all the island for an outdoor wedding.
Summer months can be very hot and dry especially on the south and western shores of our island home. Consider an indoor venue or a late day wedding to avoid cooking your tuxedo wearing groom and all your guests.
Your photographer will be able to work with any scenario if they are worth their salt. They will also help advise you on when and where to get the best light for your day. The best Hawaii wedding photographers will help you to picture everything as an artistic photograph, making your decisions easy. Remember, Hawaii is a amazing place, but it is only part of the total elements of a wedding.
However, intimate elegant or DIY weddings aren’t necessarily cheap. You may need to budget to rent out a ballroom, private estate or even a yacht to entertain your guests after the nuptials. Depending on where you hold your wedding there may be permits or special permissions necessary for you to actually hold a ceremony or a party. The options are countless here so make sure you get the right one to fit your timeline and your budget.
All that being said, when you’re saying “wedding”, you’re also saying “photography”. Even if you don’t like traditional ceremonies, you shouldn’t neglect the importance of the memories that are captured forever through professional photography. As a modern bride your wedding will be so inventive and ingeniously designed that, it actually deserves more to be captured forever by professionals who know how to capture the spirit of your modern wedding in Hawaii.
Hawaii has a lot to offer couples who want to have a modern wedding: accessibility, blue skies, crystalline waters, magical and inspiring scenery – all waiting to be committed to your memory with flawless photography.

Between the different wedding packages options offered by the photographers in Hawaii, the chance that you will be able to find a package thats tailor-made for you are actually pretty good!
Typical Package Features
Though the details of photography packages are as diverse as the modern weddings they capture, most packages share some core features that allow for easy comparison.
Selecting Your Package: Some Do’s and Don’ts
Even focusing on the core features mentioned above, navigating your options can be tricky. In order to ensure that your photos are as magical and uniquely “you” as your wedding, you should always talk to your photographer before you commit to a package.
Additional sessions
Your wedding is sure to be a magical event, but the journey up to your wedding and your newlywed adventures are likely to include their own share of enchanting moments. In order to capture your complete story, you might want to consider booking a photographer for extra sessions, such as engagement photos or trash-the-dress shoots. Some wedding photography packages include these, and they are a fantastic addition. If your photographer doesn’t include these ask about them.
Your Hawaiian wedding photos are a window into a natural paradise and into one of your life’s most dazzling moments. Use the advice above to keep a clear head while making decisions about your photography package, and your photos will be a treasure trove of memories, for life.

When it comes to wedding photography, every couple anticipates something beautiful and unique that will help them recall their special day. Whether your big day is around the corner, or you’re merely looking for inspiration, this post is for you…
Over the years, looking through our lens, we have come to recognize the truth behind what actually makes a person photogenic. It’s not their physical appearance, it’s the inner beauty they emit when being their true selves. Everyone has it and we all see it in the people around us every day.
As a photographer, “It’s one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it’s another thing all together, to make a portrait of who they are.” — Paul Caponigro.
As we shoot, we aim to capture that genuine happy laugh at your wedding, that person everyone becomes when they don't believe that the camera is on them. With every assignment, out photographers are looking for something special. We are looking for that inner glow that makes us fall in love with photography all over again.. As your photographer we watch, study and read mannerisms, facial expressions, anticipate emotions, and responses..... We capture all those little laughs, stolen kisses, and a couple's secret language for their lifetime of memories..
Anyone Can Capture A Picture, We Want More.
Why Do Your Subjects Look So Natural?
The challenge we face as photographers is finding the balance between making emotive, spontaneous images vs. perfectly posed, smiling pictures. When you look back at the pictures you have taken in school as a kid vs the pictures you have taken with your mobile phone, you can understand where we are coming from. ]]>Friends don’t let friends take your wedding photographs
1) What do we pay them? , Do they expect to be paid?
2) Will they show up on time, or at all if we don't pay them?
3) Will they capture the special & iconic events of the day?
4) When will we see our wedding photos after the wedding?
5) Will or can they edit, print or make an album of the photos they take?
6) ..... And What if they totally mess up the images, will we still be friends?
The images below document our “See The Difference” campaign for brides to be, the photo below is courtesy of the Professional Photographers of America
We wanted to explain visually, the importance that it can make to work with a professional. These two photographs while simple and iconic appear in most weddings. This example makes it easy to see the difference it makes working with a professional photographer. An event as important as your wedding requires that it be handled by a professional. A “nice camera“ doesn’t take the photos, the photographer takes them. Without using proper photographic lighting, & posing techniques, the difference is clear. The photographs on the right, demonstrate how a professional photographer with experience would approach the same situation as a friend with a nice camera would, on the left.
You only get one chance
Choosing the right wedding photographer for your wedding is one of the highest priorities on most brides list. Here are a few things to consider when working with a photographer.
In Hawaii there are hundreds of FULL TIME professional wedding photographers, Hawaiianpix is proud to have served over a thousand wedding clients in the last 15 years.
A professional photographer will have the answers to these and many more questions, it’s your wedding, your wedding photographer should display the experience necessary to answer
Ideally for our weddings, we like to spend 30-45 minutes with the couple alone. This is after the family formals. It is all about your first photos as a “married “ couple, very romantic.
Plan a stop or location for a photo shoot, usually on the way from the church to the reception venue. We always have a plan for taking photographs and visit locations before the wedding day and do our homework. This helps save our clients' time on the wedding day, allowing you to make the most of it.
Wedding photography is about capturing one of the most important days of your life. Be properly prepared, hire a pro and have fun while shooting. Enjoy your wedding knowing that on the day you’ve chosen to be one of your happiest and most memorable, you will have the photographs to prove it.
