Celebrating The Traditional Four Seasons Of Change (In Hawaii?)

Ok time to come clean, Hawaii doesn't see a four season change. Probably not "news" but hey, what really is these days? Having been plopped on the planet about 21 degrees above the equator, it's no secret that the weather in Hawaii is pretty darn good. While the seasons in Hawaii are a little less dramatic, they do change.

The indicators aren't the forests of colorful leaves or frost on the grass but there are signs. One of the big ones is the change in the surf around our island home. During this season it begins to change going from a southerly summer swell to a cooler northern one.

As the winter months approach, the surf arrives to our in islands from storms in the north Pacific. This is the source of our famous "North Shore Surf" that bring monster waves and top notch surfers to the islands. Those same storms also bring life giving rain to Hawaii, between Dec and April, without which, we would not have drinking water. 

Our hot, sunny, cloudless skies of summer end in mid to late October. This is the arrival of the winter season in Hawaii. During this time you'll see amazing rainbows created by passing clouds, dropping showers in the path of a lower hanging winter sun. October to November mark the arrival of the Humpback Whales and shorter days. While we still have about 12 hours of daylight, it does drop by about 1 hour from summer. Our temperatures drop about 10 degrees Fahrenheit to the mid 70's at night and mid 80's most days.

As summer slips into fall believe us, the locals feel the change of even a few degrees. 
We know that most seasoned winter folks would say, "thats not that cold", which is technically true. However, temperature in a place like Hawaii is marked with subtle changes, which can be seen in what the locals are wearing.

If you can't tell it's winter by our obvious lack of snow on the beach, don't worry just look around you for locals wearing sweatshirts or heavy jackets with shorts or jeans & socks in our slippahs.

Okay, so you have your appointment scheduled or are planning to do a couples or family photography session in Hawaii. Once you've set the time and location, you might think you're all set right? Well not exactly, now comes the hard part... What do I wear to my appointment?!

This is one of the most common things we hear from our customers, "I have nothing to wear" to my session. Well, that may not be entirely true. Most everyone has something in their wardrobe that fits the guidelines below. If however you don't, can you seriously think of a better reason to go shopping? Here's some simple rules to help you look your best at your photo shoot.  

• Be Comfortable.
  • When you are comfortable in the clothes you are wearing, your pictures reflect it. We always suggest something in natural fabrics, cottons, light weight work best spring through fall and for all portraits.
  • keep clothing loose but not baggy, " island style " is a good description of the casual but classic look you might want to put on. 
  • Hey there is a reason we dress this way, when in Hawaii, do as the Hawaiians, be comfortable

Choose a color Palette that is consistent .... or complimentary

• Stay "Cool" - everyone works on the Cyan, Blue & Green Side of the spectrum
• Get "Hot" - everyone chooses clothes that fall in the Red, Yellow & Magenta palettes
• Compliment one another - play Blue against yellow, Cyan against Red, Green Against Magenta
• Be like Switserland - Stay newtral. If you aren't sure what to wear with all the other colorful characters in your photos, go with basic black, grey or white. These colors work with everything. 
• Tying everyone in your part together in a common theme in both style and color, is the best.

Avoid Loud Prints

• This is true for just about any portrait session. Solids work best, the only real exception to this is if you have small children (Keiki) in the photo with you. The louder brighter colors will help them to stand out among the adults

Stay Away From "Matching Print" Shirts and Dresses

• This is simple math really it helps you avoid looking like, you are wearing the same shirt when you stand close together. 

• What Works Well With A Hawaiian Background?
• At The Beach
  • Early or late day sun tends to be warm reds, yellows and oranges. Late day photos also get dark quick, choose light colors for evening and complimentary colors, cyan, blue green even purples and taupe or white tones, muted colors to match the softer color of the light you are working in.
  • For a primarily water background during the mid day, you will see incredible cyan, blue and green colors. neutrals and warmer tones work well to separate you from your surroundings. A peach, muted orange or for serious contrast red, will set you apart. If you want to wear prints, this is the place, most ocean scenery is open and not that busy. 
• In a Garden Setting or Park
  • Where there is a lot of greenery, leafy vegetation & grass, stay neutral or go warm. Stick with solids here because anything that is printed may clash with your backgrounds that will make your photos very busy.
  • Avoid large leaf print Aloha shirts like they are on fire. You will blend right into your background and be like the floating head guy on the news who forgot and wore green, which you should also avoid. 
• What about a combination setting, Beach and Park?
  • We routinely do photos at Ala Moana Beach Park, this offers the best of both worlds for our clients but can be a nightmare to prepare for. Stick with warmer tones for the most part and avoid heavy prints, additionally you can fall back on solids and neutral tones to keep you from blending into the background.

• It sounds simple enough but many people will wear shoes, socks, nylons, even Stiletto's to a beach portrait session.... REALLY? This doesn't work out well, first those things can be dangerous and second you aren't going to a movie premier, you are going to a beach, rocky shoreline or a grassy park. You will find that your shoes like your clothes, should be island style.
  • Men - dress shoes, will fill with sand and you will end up carrying them
  • Women - high heel shoes, will sink in both grass or sand and scary on rocky shores. 
• Comfortable footwear that can be easily gotten into and out of is a must for a beach session. Most of the time while you are on the beach you will be barefoot anyway.
  • Hawaiian "Slippahs" you might know them by the sound they make ..." flip flops " these are your very best friend. Most folks in Hawaii own more pair of slippahs than shoes.

• ​​​​​​Lastly, it is important to remember that you don't want your clothes to compete with you as the main subject. We usually suggest staying away from busy prints and sticking with solid colors.  Solid colors work best with the Hawaiian scenery in any location and present a clean bold front to your portrait.

A couple of palm trees are gorgeous, but more foliage than that looks cluttered.

3.Vibrant color contrast

Hawaii is known for tropical colors that popping out of every corner. For your photographs, choose a location that plays up this magical aspect of island life. The beaches on the east side of the island are known for the high contrast between white sand and brilliantly blue water.

4.  Simple

As stunning as Hawaii is, you have to be careful that the island’s beauty doesn’t steal the focus away from you and your loved ones in your Hawaiian photographs.

A bare beach, with a bit of fluffy white surf at the shore’s edge, will emphasize the subjects of your photographs, rather than distracting from them. If you do fancy a lush, jungle scene in the background of your photos, try to find foliage that is all a similar shade of green. 

5.Convenient and accessible to the public

Spending time on an archipelago has many charms, but extensive travel on an island can be a bit of a nuisance. 2)Does editing have an additional charge?

Let’s be real: everyone has wondered, at some point in their life, how they would look if they were given the same beauty treatment and photo editing as the models who grace the pages of magazines. Your wedding photos are an opportunity to find out!
Professional photographers are not only skilled at snapping shots, some are also skilled at editing those photos into works of art. They know how to retouch and color balance your photos, so that your skin is as smooth as a pearl and your dress is still brilliantly white, against that tropical orange sunset.

Most Professionals wish to put their best foot forward and will include basic edits as part of the image selection and presentation of proof to the brides. If your photographer tells you that they will be happy to just give you the card right out of their camera, beware. They will not be editing these photos so ask if editing comes at an additional cost. You will definitely want to have your photos edited, so if there is an additional cost, especially for something as important as stellar wedding photos, you need to know to include it in your budget.

3)How many weddings have you photographed?

Experience is one of the best indicators of a wedding photographer’s quality. If the photographer has shot less than 10 weddings, there is cause for some apprehension. However, if you see photos from their previous gigs, and you are wowed by their work, you might still give them the job. After all, everyone has to start somewhere!

An important follow-up question here is “how many weddings do you shoot per week, month or year?” Any experienced Wedding photographer can tell you what their average wedding count is per year. Because Hawaii is a huge wedding destination,  photographers can be slammed, especially during peak wedding seasons. You want to verify that your photographer will have room for you in their schedule.

4)Do you carry liability insurance?

Ok This might seem like kind of a personal question, and honestly it would be if you weren't hiring someone to do your wedding at a large hotel that requires your photographer to carry such a policy. Can you honestly think of a worse scenario than arriving at your hotel on your wedding day only to find out that your photographer couldn't come on the property because they didn't have an insurance policy that covered them being there?

5)Do you have a back-up photographer?

Wedding photographers while awesome are not superheros. They can get sick or have a family crisis, just like anyone else. Unfortunately, when a wedding photographer has to take a day off work, the consequences can be disastrous for his clients.

Most photographers will have a second gun, before you choose your wedding photographer, ask this question. If they don’t work with a back-up photographer and you really want to use them, try to arrange a second person of your own. You don’t want to be stranded at the altar without anyone to capture the magic of that moment!

6)Can you recommend a videographer?

Photos make great mantle-pieces and coffee table books, but on days when you are feeling truly nostalgic for the sound of your newlywed laughter and the way that the tiki lights danced in the Hawaiian breeze, a video is the only cure!

As you interview wedding photographers in Hawaii, inquire about videographers as well. If your photographer has a videographer with whom he regularly works, coordination will be smoother, and your finished products will complement each other perfectly.

7)Do you travel between islands?

Island-hopping may seem charming to honeymooners, but for a Hawaiian wedding photographer who has to transport expensive, bulky equipment between gigs, the novelty quickly loses its luster.  Let your photographer know where you’re planning on getting married and double check that they are willing to work with your choice of the islands. A good follow up question would be “Which island are you based on?” A photographer who is based near your wedding will be less stressed and less rushed and less expensive, since flying is the only option to an outer island. Oahu is the most populated island and home-base for most photography businesses.

8)What restrictions do you have about sharing photos online? 

The first thing you’re going to want to do, when you see your wedding photos, is share them with the people you love. For most of us, that means uploading the photos to Facebook or Instagram or another social media site.

Unfortunately, photo rights can be a bit intricate. Most professional photographers take ownership over their work and impose restrictions about how you can share their photos. Remember, the photos are their source of livelihood. If you’re giving away photos for free, they won’t be in business very long. Ask if they offer a release or even special pricing for printing their images through the photographer's pro lab, where you will receive better quality than your brand X photolab.

Bonus....Do you follow a shot list?

There are a number of iconic images in every wedding album: the groom’s reaction to seeing his bride for the first time, the first kiss, the guests tossing rice or holding sparklers above the newlywed couple, as they depart. These images form what’s called a “shot list.” Basically, it’s a photographer’s must-have photos.

Seasoned professional wedding photographers already have a well oiled list of shots they do for weddings. What you will want to offer up is those unknown shots that are unique to your wedding. Make a list your wedding photographer in Hawaii needs to be prepared to see, for instance; there might be a surprise out of town guests, or a Chinese Lion Dance, maybe there will be a special Hula performed for the Groom by the Bride.

Ask your photographer what’s on their “shot list.” And you might also suggest a few additions or omissions to tighten up your specific needs. 

Remember these 8 questions to ask when you are searching for your Hawaiian Wedding Photographer, they should not only have solid answers for you about these questions but be confident in their answers and ability to relate to you asking them questions. Trusting your wedding photographer in Hawaii is paramount to the success of your event. Don't settle for 1/2 answers or " I don't know, nobody has ever asked me that before" answers. Be sure that you are dealing with a pro and  you will come away with images to last a lifetime.

Every once in a while you are lucky enough to be a part of something truly special. This is exactly what happened to us at Hawaiianpix in July. It all started like many of our portrait sessions, when a proud bride called our office. She wanted us to photograph her and her husband for their 30th anniversary, during their time on Oahu.

We were so pleased not only to be able to photograph Therese and Stanley but to get to know them during our time together. After meeting the two of them the reasons why they've had such a successful marriage were obvious to us. That's why when Therese was gracious enough to share her view on how they've made it for so long, we just had to share it with our clients, past, present and future.  

"It is difficult to put into words what the essence of being in a relationship with someone who you love and cherish for thirty years is all about... it is, something that has to be experienced. Fewer and fewer individuals are able to live this reality due to the nature of our world. If a destination wedding in Hawaii sounds too good to be true, don’t worry! It’s not. Hawaii is home to 20,000 weddings a year—and that’s not due to a local tradition of tying, un-tying, and re-tying the knot multiple times per year! Most Hawaiian weddings are planned by non-local brides, just like you. In years to come, as these brides flip through their wedding photo albums, they all agree on one thing: the extra work of planning a destination wedding was worthwhile.

So, what challenges are you up against?

The photos of your Hawaiian wedding may be all sunshine and tropical breeze, but some aspects of planning a destination wedding are anything but a breeze.

Don’ts

• Don’t chose a friend or relative. Or a friend if they are not proven professionals. These are possibly the worst choice for your wedding photographer. They typically don’t put you first. They may be cheap, even free, but they don’t do the quality work, you will expect from your wedding memories. This is mostly because they lack knowledge and don’t have the necessary tools. Their focusing on you, or your new spouse but not on your event or your relationship.
• Watch out for the Newb’s. There are approximately 35.000 photographers around Honolulu, on the island of Oahu, and some of them are new to the job. They may have an expensive camera but this is just the instrument, like a painters brush. It doesn’t paint a masterpiece or even a nice picture by itself, only a trained and skilled wedding photographer can do this for you. These newbies will shoot like crazy and find in the end that they need to edit, thousands of images. As they try to do this you wait, sometimes for months just to see your final images. Generally these upstarts are full of confidence until they hit their first challenge in lighting or event snafu.  Get someone who has at least 5 years of experience in the field, either as a second shooter or as a primary. This will be your safest bet for quality images.
• The Pro’s Know. Ok there is no denying that this IS YOUR DAY and while you are the “boss” of your wedding in Hawaii, chances are your photographers have done, seen and know more than you about their job. Sometimes it’s best to see things from their perspective, since some of their ideas may be more suitable for your wedding, and thus work better photographically. Don’t act like the only merit photographers have is holding a camera, a professional wedding photographer has likely been involved in hundreds if not thousands of weddings. Don’t waste this knowledge these trained professionals are usually as vested in your event as you are.
• Don’t assume, ask. You have to know, is your photographer doing their job to make a living, or just as a part time hobby; if they’re willing to travel outside of Oahu or Honolulu just to accommodate your wedding venue, portraits or formal photographs; how much they’re charging for this travel, and if they’re offering discounts or payment plans for their wedding packages; if they’re working with an assistant photographer or if they plan to delegate your wedding to someone else.

• Check their photo galleries. This will help you get ideas from other similar weddings, and be more specific about your desires. Some photographers may even surprise you with their own fascinating thoughts. Browsing a wedding-photographers galleries will give you the best insight any photographers style, skills and abilities.
• Inquire about different locations. The island of Oahu and by extension Honolulu, has many perfect venues for weddings and photography. Ask your photographer where they would suggest taking your wedding pictures or portraits. Ideally, the photographers should accommodate your desires, and offer a back-up plan in case something happens to the first location.
• Be specific about your style. Some wedding photographers prefer bright lighting, and natural photos – as is often flattering to the views of Honolulu. Other photographers struggle with posing and good composition, thus relying on heavy retouching. • Make friends. This example makes it easy to see the difference it makes working with a professional photographer. An event as important as your wedding requires that it be handled by a professional. A “nice camera“ doesn’t take the photos, the photographer takes them. Without using proper photographic lighting, & posing techniques, the difference is clear. 3. Plan for a little extra time
   1. Simply said the more time you have the more photographs you can get from your wedding.

Ideally for our weddings, we like to spend 30-45 minutes with the couple alone. This is after the family formals. It is all about your first photos as a “married “ couple, very romantic.

2. Most weddings in Honolulu or anywhere in Hawaii are done at least partly outdoors.   

Plan a stop or location for a photo shoot, usually on the way from the church to the reception venue. We always have a plan for taking photographs and visit locations before the wedding day and do our homework. This helps save our clients' time on the wedding day, allowing you to make the most of it.
