Celebrating The Traditional Four Seasons Of Change (In Hawaii?)

Ok time to come clean, Hawaii doesn't see a four season change. Probably not "news" but hey, what really is these days? Having been plopped on the planet about 21 degrees above the equator, it's no secret that the weather in Hawaii is pretty darn good. While the seasons in Hawaii are a little less dramatic, they do change.

Honeymoon portrait in Hawaii_CA39536-Edit
The indicators aren't the forests of colorful leaves or frost on the grass but there are signs. One of the big ones is the change in the surf around our island home. During this season it begins to change going from a southerly summer swell to a cooler northern one.

As the winter months approach, the surf arrives to our in islands from storms in the north Pacific. This is the source of our famous "North Shore Surf" that bring monster waves and top notch surfers to the islands. Those same storms also bring life giving rain to Hawaii, between Dec and April, without which, we would not have drinking water.

Our hot, sunny, cloudless skies of summer end in mid to late October. This is the arrival of the winter season in Hawaii. During this time you'll see amazing rainbows created by passing clouds, dropping showers in the path of a lower hanging winter sun. October to November mark the arrival of the Humpback Whales and shorter days. While we still have about 12 hours of daylight, it does drop by about 1 hour from summer. Our temperatures drop about 10 degrees Fahrenheit to the mid 70's at night and mid 80's most days.

As summer slips into fall believe us, the locals feel the change of even a few degrees.
We know that most seasoned winter folks would say, "thats not that cold", which is technically true. However, temperature in a place like Hawaii is marked with subtle changes, which can be seen in what the locals are wearing.

If you can't tell it's winter by our obvious lack of snow on the beach, don't worry just look around you for locals wearing sweatshirts or heavy jackets with shorts or jeans & socks in our slippahs.

Hawaii Family Portrait_CA45235

Even though we may be cold, we do welcome the winter months. These months mean families and couples will be gathering in Hawaii from around the world. They'll be celebrating reunions from, simple vacations to weddings, honeymoons, engagements or just to thaw out for a little while.

Whatever the reason, memorable moments will be made and we would like to help you share them forever with our 50% off package specials. - Video Info

Hawaiianpix announces new 50% OFF 'Digital File Packages' for Groupon Customers

Why Use a Groupon For our Service? ....... Why Not?
We have been providing amazing portraits both local and visiting customer, through Groupon since 2011.

Until just recently all our Groupon portrait packages were print only, no digital files.
All that changed and the response from customers has been fantastic.

You have multiple choices available for just about every photo shoot you can think of.

Common Questions

  • Where are you located?
    • Hawaiianpix operates around the island of Oahu
  • How far in advance can we reserve a session?
    • We recommend between 2 weeks and 1 year before you want to do your photos.
  • How long is the photo shoot?
    • Our sessions are scheduled in one hour blocks.
  • Can I add time?
    • Yes you can add time to your session if you wish however, a one hour session is generally plenty of time.

    • The number of subjects varies between 1-5 people depending on the photo shoot you reserve. You can add people onto your photo shoot though for a $20 per person fee.
  • Where can we do our photo shoot?
    • We have locations on all 4 corners of Oahu. The include Waimanalo Bay State Recreation Area, Ala Moana Beach Park, Lanikuhonua Beach and Papailoa Beach.

I Have Nothing To Wear https://hawaiianpix.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/4/what-do-i-wear-for-my-photo-session

Okay, so you have your appointment scheduled or are planning to do a couples or family photography session in Hawaii. Once you've set the time and location, you might think you're all set right? Well not exactly, now comes the hard part... What do I wear to my appointment?!

This is one of the most common things we hear from our customers, "I have nothing to wear" to my session. Well, that may not be entirely true. Most everyone has something in their wardrobe that fits the guidelines below. If however you don't, can you seriously think of a better reason to go shopping? Here's some simple rules to help you look your best at your photo shoot.

  • Be Comfortable.
    • When you are comfortable in the clothes you are wearing, your pictures reflect it. We always suggest something in natural fabrics, cottons, light weight work best spring through fall and for all portraits.
    • keep clothing loose but not baggy, " island style " is a good description of the casual but classic look you might want to put on.
    • Hey there is a reason we dress this way, when in Hawaii, do as the Hawaiians, be comfortable

Choose a color Palette that is consistent .... or complimentary

  • Stay "Cool" - everyone works on the Cyan, Blue & Green Side of the spectrum
  • Get "Hot" - everyone chooses clothes that fall in the Red, Yellow & Magenta palettes
  • Compliment one another - play Blue against yellow, Cyan against Red, Green Against Magenta
  • Be like Switserland - Stay newtral. If you aren't sure what to wear with all the other colorful characters in your photos, go with basic black, grey or white. These colors work with everything.
  • Tying everyone in your part together in a common theme in both style and color, is the best.

Avoid Loud Prints

  • This is true for just about any portrait session. Solids work best, the only real exception to this is if you have small children (Keiki) in the photo with you. The louder brighter colors will help them to stand out among the adults

Stay Away From "Matching Print" Shirts and Dresses

  • This is simple math really it helps you avoid looking like, you are wearing the same shirt when you stand close together.

  • What Works Well With A Hawaiian Background?
  • At The Beach
    • Early or late day sun tends to be warm reds, yellows and oranges. Late day photos also get dark quick, choose light colors for evening and complimentary colors, cyan, blue green even purples and taupe or white tones, muted colors to match the softer color of the light you are working in.
    • For a primarily water background during the mid day, you will see incredible cyan, blue and green colors. neutrals and warmer tones work well to separate you from your surroundings. A peach, muted orange or for serious contrast red, will set you apart. If you want to wear prints, this is the place, most ocean scenery is open and not that busy.
  • In a Garden Setting or Park
    • Where there is a lot of greenery, leafy vegetation & grass, stay neutral or go warm. Stick with solids here because anything that is printed may clash with your backgrounds that will make your photos very busy.
    • Avoid large leaf print Aloha shirts like they are on fire. You will blend right into your background and be like the floating head guy on the news who forgot and wore green, which you should also avoid.
  • What about a combination setting, Beach and Park?
    • We routinely do photos at Ala Moana Beach Park, this offers the best of both worlds for our clients but can be a nightmare to prepare for. Stick with warmer tones for the most part and avoid heavy prints, additionally you can fall back on solids and neutral tones to keep you from blending into the background.

Ala Moana Beach Park - Near Waikiki in Honolulu & Iconic Diamond Head Family Portrait Honolulu HawaiiAla Moana Beach Park Family PhotosNeutral family colors with the baby that has a pop to help her stand out in the photos Footwear, Be Aware Of Your Surroundings

  • It sounds simple enough but many people will wear shoes, socks, nylons, even Stiletto's to a beach portrait session.... REALLY? This doesn't work out well, first those things can be dangerous and second you aren't going to a movie premier, you are going to a beach, rocky shoreline or a grassy park. You will find that your shoes like your clothes, should be island style.
    • Men - dress shoes, will fill with sand and you will end up carrying them
    • Women - high heel shoes, will sink in both grass or sand and scary on rocky shores.
  • Comfortable footwear that can be easily gotten into and out of is a must for a beach session. Most of the time while you are on the beach you will be barefoot anyway.
    • Hawaiian "Slippahs" you might know them by the sound they make ..." flip flops " these are your very best friend. Most folks in Hawaii own more pair of slippahs than shoes.

North Shore Papailoa Beach - Arlene Y. Family

  • Lastly, it is important to remember that you don't want your clothes to compete with you as the main subject. We usually suggest staying away from busy prints and sticking with solid colors.  Solid colors work best with the Hawaiian scenery in any location and present a clean bold front to your portrait.

Location Photography In Hawaii https://hawaiianpix.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/9/location-photography-in-hawaii How to choose the perfect location for your Hawaiian photographs

Panorama of beach in HawaiiLanikuhonuabeach with rainbow Choosing the perfect spot for your Hawaiian photographs is no easy task. Hardly an inch of the island chain falls short of dazzling, so when it comes time to choose just one location for the backdrop of your maternity photographs, family portraits, or wedding photographs in Hawaii, you might find yourself overwhelmed by options!

Luckily, the islands are full of colorful friendly locals, who can help you narrow down your choices. Begin your hunt for the best photo locations in Hawaii by consulting these people:

1.Hawaii tourist agencies and online trip advisors

Inside a tourist agency or trip advisory website, you will find a team of friendly experts on Hawaii’s hidden gems. This group will be able to suggest plenty of leads. They can tell you where the sugar sand beaches are and where waves crash over black, volcanic rock. They can refer you to lush botanical gardens or tell you where you’ll have a great view of the Hawaiian sunset. Browse these sites to get an idea of what Hawaii has to offer before you arrive: Hawaii.com, Tripadvisor.com, lonelyplanet.com

While tourist agencies might have some great ideas or maybe even been to the locations they recommend, they aren’t experts in photography, portrait, wedding or otherwise. Make sure you follow up on their leads to verify that a location would be practical for photography with a local Hawaii based photographer.

2.Photographers in Hawaii

Your Hawaiian photographer should be your number one, go-to resource for planning your Hawaiian photography session. Experienced photographers in Hawaii have been spearheading the quest for beautiful photography locations for years. They are likely to have a list of their own favorite locations, which they can recommend to you for your wedding photographs or family portraits which are stunning, secluded and beautiful.

In addition to knowing where beauty lies, Your photographers also know what locations work best in terms of lighting, accessibility, and crowd-control. From the seasonal changes of the sunset and waves to the rainy and sunny times, your photographer is your best resource when it comes to choosing your location!

3.Don't deny your eye....

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, at the end of the day, your maternity photos, family portraits, or wedding pictures deserve a choice that you make after evaluating from all the information about locations to the style and scenery. Choose a  photographer that is diverse in their ability to cover different locations, lighting and seasonal situations. After all this may be your one and only trip to the islands and that one image could be the one you keep forever.

Try to have a clear vision of what you you want before you choose a location. Do you picture yourself and your groom standing on a volcanic rock, with waves crashing dramatically behind you? Or are you hoping to catch some candid cuties of your children playing in the sand? Whatever you envision as the backdrop of your photographs in Hawaii, don’t settle for less. You can find a location that matches up with your vision. Now that you’ve narrowed down the list of possible locations, with input from a Hawaiian photographer and from your own mind’s eye, whittle that list down one by searching for a place that meets these criteria:

1.Minimal tourist traffic

Nothing is more disruptive than a tourist, in a bright Hawaiian shirt, meandering their way through the background of your photos. Your photos are all about you and your loved ones. Scout out a place with some privacy, so that you and Hawaii will be the focus of your photos. If you really must shoot your photos at a popular location, find out when the peak hours are and avoid them!

2.Clear horizon

The tropical sunset is one of the most iconic images to come out of Hawaii, and as all Hawaiian wedding photographers know, the lighting is ideal for silhouette portraiture. If you want to make your mark on a Hawaiian sunset, make sure that you choose a location with a clear view of the horizon. A couple of palm trees are gorgeous, but more foliage than that looks cluttered.

hawaii beach sunrise engagement sessionengagement photography hawaiicouples engagement session Waimanalo bay state recreation area Honolulu, Hawaii

3.Vibrant color contrast

Hawaii is known for tropical colors that popping out of every corner. For your photographs, choose a location that plays up this magical aspect of island life. The beaches on the east side of the island are known for the high contrast between white sand and brilliantly blue water.

4.  Simple

As stunning as Hawaii is, you have to be careful that the island’s beauty doesn’t steal the focus away from you and your loved ones in your Hawaiian photographs.

A bare beach, with a bit of fluffy white surf at the shore’s edge, will emphasize the subjects of your photographs, rather than distracting from them. If you do fancy a lush, jungle scene in the background of your photos, try to find foliage that is all a similar shade of green.

5.Convenient and accessible to the public

Spending time on an archipelago has many charms, but extensive travel on an island can be a bit of a nuisance. You’ll be less stressed (and have brighter smiles!) if you are able to set up your photography session close to your lodgings. This is doubly true if you’ve chosen to get family photography in Hawaii, as the smaller members of your family can complicate travel, or if you’re having wedding photos made, as you will be occupied with all the other details of your big day.

Don’t forget to double check that the location you choose for your Hawaiian photos is publicly accessible. Many unmarked stretches of beach belong to resorts. You wouldn’t want an employee to shoo you away in the middle of your photo session! When you think you’ve got the perfect location nailed down, touch base one last time with your Hawaiian photographer. They can warn you of any complications involved in your choice, or give you tips for what to bring and wear to make the most of your beautiful spot!

8 Things To Ask A Hawaii Wedding Photographer https://hawaiianpix.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/9/8-things-to-ask-a-hawaii-wedding-photographer 8 things to know beforeimportant things to ask your photographer What To Know Before You Hire a Hawaii Wedding Photographer

Sparkling sands and rich sunsets lure thousands of brides, each year, to Hawaii’s shores. The brides, in turn, have lured a huge net full of wedding photographers to the islands.

When you decide to say “I do” on any of Hawaii’s tropical islands, from dazzling Oahu to relaxing Maui, you will have no shortage of wedding photographers to choose between. You can narrow the pool by studying the photographers’ packages, pricing, portfolios, and blogs, but don’t make a final decision until you’ve actually spoken to your favorite candidates. Interview your Hawaii based photographer beforehand, and fish out additional, essential information with these questions:

signWedding photography styledoes your photographers style fit your idea of a wedding?

1) Can you describe your style?

You want to make sure that your wedding photographer’s eye aligns with your vision of a wedding in Hawaii. If you imagine a soft, seaside fairytale, you might not get the best results from a photographer who describes his style as “retro, rockabilly.” Of course, a solid professional photographer will be able to adapt their technique to many different styles. A good follow-up question might be, “Have you ever worked on a wedding with my style?” That photographer with a personal fetish for the 1950s, might be able to show you dreamy pictures they’ve taken from a wedding that matches your style.

2)Does editing have an additional charge?

Let’s be real: everyone has wondered, at some point in their life, how they would look if they were given the same beauty treatment and photo editing as the models who grace the pages of magazines. Your wedding photos are an opportunity to find out!
Professional photographers are not only skilled at snapping shots, some are also skilled at editing those photos into works of art. They know how to retouch and color balance your photos, so that your skin is as smooth as a pearl and your dress is still brilliantly white, against that tropical orange sunset.

Hawaii wedding photounedited vs edited wedding image

Most Professionals wish to put their best foot forward and will include basic edits as part of the image selection and presentation of proof to the brides. If your photographer tells you that they will be happy to just give you the card right out of their camera, beware. They will not be editing these photos so ask if editing comes at an additional cost. You will definitely want to have your photos edited, so if there is an additional cost, especially for something as important as stellar wedding photos, you need to know to include it in your budget.

calendar sharecalendar share

3)How many weddings have you photographed?

Experience is one of the best indicators of a wedding photographer’s quality. If the photographer has shot less than 10 weddings, there is cause for some apprehension. However, if you see photos from their previous gigs, and you are wowed by their work, you might still give them the job. After all, everyone has to start somewhere!

An important follow-up question here is “how many weddings do you shoot per week, month or year?” Any experienced Wedding photographer can tell you what their average wedding count is per year. Because Hawaii is a huge wedding destination,  photographers can be slammed, especially during peak wedding seasons. You want to verify that your photographer will have room for you in their schedule.

4)Do you carry liability insurance?

Ok This might seem like kind of a personal question, and honestly it would be if you weren't hiring someone to do your wedding at a large hotel that requires your photographer to carry such a policy. Can you honestly think of a worse scenario than arriving at your hotel on your wedding day only to find out that your photographer couldn't come on the property because they didn't have an insurance policy that covered them being there?

5)Do you have a back-up photographer?

Wedding photographers while awesome are not superheros. They can get sick or have a family crisis, just like anyone else. Unfortunately, when a wedding photographer has to take a day off work, the consequences can be disastrous for his clients.

Most photographers will have a second gun, before you choose your wedding photographer, ask this question. If they don’t work with a back-up photographer and you really want to use them, try to arrange a second person of your own. You don’t want to be stranded at the altar without anyone to capture the magic of that moment!

6)Can you recommend a videographer?

Photos make great mantle-pieces and coffee table books, but on days when you are feeling truly nostalgic for the sound of your newlywed laughter and the way that the tiki lights danced in the Hawaiian breeze, a video is the only cure!

As you interview wedding photographers in Hawaii, inquire about videographers as well. If your photographer has a videographer with whom he regularly works, coordination will be smoother, and your finished products will complement each other perfectly.

Hawaiian travel between the islandsinter island air in Hawaii
7)Do you travel between islands?

Island-hopping may seem charming to honeymooners, but for a Hawaiian wedding photographer who has to transport expensive, bulky equipment between gigs, the novelty quickly loses its luster.  Let your photographer know where you’re planning on getting married and double check that they are willing to work with your choice of the islands. A good follow up question would be “Which island are you based on?” A photographer who is based near your wedding will be less stressed and less rushed and less expensive, since flying is the only option to an outer island. Oahu is the most populated island and home-base for most photography businesses.

8)What restrictions do you have about sharing photos online?

The first thing you’re going to want to do, when you see your wedding photos, is share them with the people you love. For most of us, that means uploading the photos to Facebook or Instagram or another social media site.

Unfortunately, photo rights can be a bit intricate. Most professional photographers take ownership over their work and impose restrictions about how you can share their photos. Remember, the photos are their source of livelihood. If you’re giving away photos for free, they won’t be in business very long. Ask if they offer a release or even special pricing for printing their images through the photographer's pro lab, where you will receive better quality than your brand X photolab.

Bonus....Do you follow a shot list?

There are a number of iconic images in every wedding album: the groom’s reaction to seeing his bride for the first time, the first kiss, the guests tossing rice or holding sparklers above the newlywed couple, as they depart. These images form what’s called a “shot list.” Basically, it’s a photographer’s must-have photos.

Seasoned professional wedding photographers already have a well oiled list of shots they do for weddings. What you will want to offer up is those unknown shots that are unique to your wedding. Make a list your wedding photographer in Hawaii needs to be prepared to see, for instance; there might be a surprise out of town guests, or a Chinese Lion Dance, maybe there will be a special Hula performed for the Groom by the Bride.

Ask your photographer what’s on their “shot list.” And you might also suggest a few additions or omissions to tighten up your specific needs.

Remember these 8 questions to ask when you are searching for your Hawaiian Wedding Photographer, they should not only have solid answers for you about these questions but be confident in their answers and ability to relate to you asking them questions. Trusting your wedding photographer in Hawaii is paramount to the success of your event. Don't settle for 1/2 answers or " I don't know, nobody has ever asked me that before" answers. Be sure that you are dealing with a pro and  you will come away with images to last a lifetime.

A Romantic 30th Anniversary In Waikiki https://hawaiianpix.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/8/anniversary-waikiki-hawaii 30th anniversary in waikikiHawaiian anniversary in Waikiki

Every once in a while you are lucky enough to be a part of something truly special. This is exactly what happened to us at Hawaiianpix in July. It all started like many of our portrait sessions, when a proud bride called our office. She wanted us to photograph her and her husband for their 30th anniversary, during their time on Oahu.

We were so pleased not only to be able to photograph Therese and Stanley but to get to know them during our time together. After meeting the two of them the reasons why they've had such a successful marriage were obvious to us. That's why when Therese was gracious enough to share her view on how they've made it for so long, we just had to share it with our clients, past, present and future.

"It is difficult to put into words what the essence of being in a relationship with someone who you love and cherish for thirty years is all about... it is, something that has to be experienced. Fewer and fewer individuals are able to live this reality due to the nature of our world. Mutual respect, genuine acceptance, acknowledgment for each other and allowing one another the space to grow are a few of the key components that nurture this type of relationship to fruition. Contentment for familiarity is also a part of the equation; however, lackadaisical attention to ones' self can make this reality difficult at best.

Meeting with Jerry to take our pictures for our 30th wedding anniversary was a wonderful experience. He made us feel so comfortable, as if we had known him for a long time. Sharing special moments with others helps to keep us grounded in our beliefs, dreams and goals. Capturing the essence of a lifetime of experiences takes an expert, such as Jerry! Thank you so much Hawaiianpix for capturing our special moment!"

From the bottom of our hearts Therese and Stanley, Mahalo! You two are an inspiration, we are honored to have been a part of such a special occasion and can’t thank you enough for sharing your insights into marriage longevity with our clients.

Destination Wedding Photography Oahu Hawaii https://hawaiianpix.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/4/destination-wedding-photography-oahu-hawaii Destination Wedding Photography Oahu HawaiiDestination Wedding Photography Oahu HawaiiDestination Wedding Photography Oahu Hawaii If you feel the pull of the ocean tide on your heart, there’s no finer wedding destination for you than Hawaii. Whether you say “I Do” to Honolulu, Oahu’s vibrant cultural center, or to the pristine beaches of Maui, your Hawaiian destination wedding will be a tropical beauty. And don’t forget to capture all your Hawaiian moments—your beach dress, romantic sunset, tiki-lit first dance, and loved ones toasting their fruity cocktails—by choosing a wedding photographer with top reviews to photograph your wedding!

If a destination wedding in Hawaii sounds too good to be true, don’t worry! It’s not. Hawaii is home to 20,000 weddings a year—and that’s not due to a local tradition of tying, un-tying, and re-tying the knot multiple times per year! Most Hawaiian weddings are planned by non-local brides, just like you. In years to come, as these brides flip through their wedding photo albums, they all agree on one thing: the extra work of planning a destination wedding was worthwhile.

So, what challenges are you up against?

The photos of your Hawaiian wedding may be all sunshine and tropical breeze, but some aspects of planning a destination wedding are anything but a breeze.

Here are some of the challenges that your wedding photos won’t reveal:

  • You might be unable to see venues and meet vendors in person. Unless you are able to take off extra time from work and plan a scouting trip to Hawaii before your wedding, meet with vendors, and visit venues, you will have to rely on your googling prowess to choose your wedding crew and location.
  • You could have a difficult time locating some items. Hawaii floats in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, 2,400 miles away from the nearest landmass. While the island’s bustling wedding industry (complete with venues, caterers, dress makers, cake designers, and photographers) can answer most of your wishes, unusual tastes or specific, sentimental “must haves” will require extra planning for importation.
  • Making a guest list is difficult. Hawaii is probably a dream vacation spot for most of your friends and family members, but that doesn’t mean they are going to be able to jump up and fly to Hawaii on your command. Your friends and family might waffle on whether or not they can attend, and fluctuations in your guest list will be a major headache as you make travel and accommodation reservations and submit headcounts to your venue and caterer.
  • Your guests will have to find accommodations. Hawaii is full of picture perfect hotels and resorts, as well as B&Bs and private estates—but all of these will be an additional expense for those who attend your wedding.
  • Marriage requirements could be different than your state. In order to get married in Hawaii, you and your fiancé must bring photo IDs to a courthouse in Hawaii and sign for a wedding license . Once you have the license, there is no waiting period. A licensed Hawaiian officiant can marry you any time up to 30 days after the license has been issued. After the ceremony, your wedding officiant will return the license to the department of health, and you will have to wait to receive an official marriage certificate in the mail. Because mail from Hawaii can take a while, you might be waiting for a few weeks.
  • You might need a beach permit. Some of Hawaii’s most photogenic wedding backdrops, like beaches, parks, and state protected areas, are highly regulated. You will need a permit to host your celebration in some of these locations. Check with your photographer if your location is among those requiring a permit.
  • Island time. There may be significant time differences between yourself and Hawaii, which can make communicating with venues, caterers, and photographers difficult. Because destination weddings in Hawaii are very popular, wedding service people are in high demand. Their work schedules are intense, and they receive a ton of voicemails every day.

What are the solutions?

Don’t let yourself be too intimidated by the challenges above! Remember, over 20,000 weddings take place in Hawaii each year, and your wedding can too! Be persistent in your communication with vendors and venues, and stick to your planning timeline.

Here are the solutions to your challenges:

  • Learn to recognize quality venues and vendors online. Quality venues and vendors will have clean, easy to use websites and tons of pictures for you to browse through. They may have blogs that feature the stories of previous weddings they have been involved with or offer you guidance on planning your wedding. They should also have a large volume of positive feedback from previous clients. When you find a venue/vendor with beautiful photos, clear authority, and positive reviews, reach out to them with a phone call or Skype call and hash out the details of your wedding. Even a top quality vendor might not be the right fit for you, so shop around and compare multiple venues/vendors until you find your perfect match.
  • Plan ahead to accommodate your unusual items. When possible, buy any unusual must-haves (like vintage cake plates, monogrammed kites, or shoes the color of your favorite sports team)  ahead of time and pack them in luggage. When impossible, search for a supplier who can deliver to Hawaii. Make sure that you weigh the cost of importation against the importance of this item. Do you really need that bouquet of peonies, or would you be just as happy with a splash of tropical wildflowers?
  • Set your RSVP date in stone and have a second reception. You must give your venue and caterer a headcount before your wedding, so make sure you let your loved ones know that your RSVP date is set in stone.  If you feel shy about asking guests to travel, you can always have a second reception after you return from Hawaii.
  • Look into resort packages. If you have a crowd of guests coming in for your wedding, you can get a reduced price on accommodations when you book rooms for all of them in one place. Some resorts also include entertainment like spa treatments or snorkeling trips in their packages. Guests will be happier to pay to attend your wedding if they are getting a vacation in the bargain!
  • Plan ahead to meet marriage requirements. Book an appointment to get your license and avoid spending time in line when you could be soaking up the colors and smells of paradise! Also, make sure you bring all the documents needed to get a license along with you. Nothing would be more disappointing than arriving in Hawaii, with a plane full of your loved ones, only to find out that you can’t get married because you left your photo ID at home! If you’re under a time crunch to receive your marriage certificate and can’t wait on snail mail, you can walk into the department of health to pick up your certificate.
  • Develop a generous timeline. The recommended amount of time you spend planning a destination wedding is 9-15 months. The farther ahead you plan, the better rates you can get on travel, and the more options you will have in reserving venues and vendors like your photographer. Create a checklist of everything you need for your wedding and make sure all the boxes are checked at least a month before your big day. That way, if any last minute glitches pop up, you will have time to solve them. An on-site wedding coordinator can also help you get prompt responses from venues and vendors as well as facilitate other aspects of wedding.

What makes Hawaii worthwhile?

For many couples, vacationing in Hawaii is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Multiply that once-in-a-lifetime vacation times your once-in-a-lifetime wedding day, and you will begin to understand the magic of a destination wedding in Hawaii.

Hawaii’s booming wedding industry is also a jewel for you, as a bride to be. The islands are teeming with wedding venues, caterers, dress stores, cake designers, honeymoon resorts, and photographers. When you hire local services, you will receive the insight of both a native islander and a wedding industry leader. For example, when you hire a Hawaiian wedding photographer, you hire a professional who knows all Hawaii’s hidden pockets of beauty, how to take a picture of your dress melting into the sea foam, how to capture the rich gold of a Hawaiian sunset bathing your skin, and how to immortalize the effect of the bright, Hawaiian spirit in each of your guests’ smiles.

Choosing Hawaii for a destination wedding is truly one of the most rewarding decisions you can make for your special day!

Modern Wedding Photography in Hawaii https://hawaiianpix.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/4/modern-wedding-photography-in-hawaii DIY Wedding engagementBoho BrideSimple, Bohemian, Bride, budget wedding or engagement photos in Hawaii

Hawaii is one of the best wedding locations in the world. Whether you’re looking to have a traditional or a modern wedding, Hawaii provides the perfect modern wedding scenery. From Boho to Elegant today's wedding in Hawaii has it all. Recording that wedding in the style and feel you are looking for requires a knowledgeable professional photographer. Wedding photography is an art that is a collaboration between the couple and their photographer. The couple brings the ideas and style request and the modern wedding photographer brings the vision of their wedding to life. They employ their talent, experience and expertise for your benefit. Immortalize the greatest event in your life with modern wedding photography in Hawaii from the best photographers in Honolulu.

There are two common types of modern weddings frequently celebrated around the US and in Hawaii. Most young couples dream of leaving their mark with their special event, and that’s why they choose to do either a modern elegant or DIY, BOHO style wedding. We are going to compare the two and you will find they aren't all that different when it comes to how they are put together.

Destination couples who decide to get married in Hawaii, opt for smaller scale weddings, with around 30 to 50 guests. While weddings held for local families can include hundreds of guests. Either way communicating your specific style of wedding to your photographer will help them to grasp the feel, colors, scale and lighting needed to achieve your ideal wedding.

Whatever you may consider important for your modern wedding in Hawaii, think of quality photography as an inherent condition. Regardless of the type of wedding you'll only want to hire a true masters of wedding photography. A skilled and seasoned wedding professional who knows Hawaii.

In this article, we’ll discuss both types of modern weddings, elegant and intimate as well as simple and BOHO. We'll explore why you need to seriously take your professional photographer into account with both styles and why.

A guide to modern weddings in Hawaii

  • Stick to the budget. Deciding on a maximum budget is the best thing you can do for your wedding and believe us… we know!

Setting your priorities straight helps a lot. If you’re looking for a modern, DIY wedding in Hawaii, it means you won’t have the help of an event planner and you’ll have to do all the financial planning, flowers, invitations, table favors, and maybe even the dress, yourself. Certainly a great financial choice if you have the time.

If your dream wedding means an elegant and high end event for just a few close friends and family, you’ll probably be spending more on the venue to accommodate such an illustrious guest list. The who’s who of your family and friends. You’ll dress to impress and need to have a solid planner to assist you with your location, flowers, transportation and of course the location. The area around Honolulu can provide you with a lot of magical places for you to have your perfect wedding. From four and 5 star hotels to intimate and classic Churches and Gardens.

  • DIY Should Involve Friends and Family. Think of all the fun you can have with the people who are closest to your heart, and imagine all the photo-worthy moments you’ll be getting even before your wedding. Besides, Hawaii is the greatest area to plan and build modern DIY weddings, since you can work on the beach and enjoy some quality time together, hey this place invented the Luau!

The same goes for an modern elegant wedding: you can get together with the whole gang and let everyone contribute with modern ideas. Shopping is a must, with some of the worlds’ elite clothing and accessory stores right here on Oahu, you can find nearly any hand bag, bridal gift or that special wedding night gown that you are looking for.

  • Get the basics done. The invites, RSVP, thank you cards, program, guestbook, name cards, seating arrangement chart are all issues you have to consider for a wedding regardless of the style of wedding you choose.

The modern approach consists of having most of these sent via e-mail, so you can spend your budget on other things, which are more worthy to be photographed and remembered.

The typical low-key Hawaiian wedding allows couples to totally disregard name cards and seating arrangements. Who needs that when everybody knows each other?

  • Choose the right decorations and season.

Wedding Table DecorationsClassic, Modern, Wedding In HawaiiDIY, Card, Gift Box One of the biggest mistakes we see in modern weddings is, when couples don't properly adorn their environment, because they believe the Hawaii scenery is enough. While amazing, your wedding day is about so much more, dress it up a little. Take into account the photography side of things, the scenery is only the backdrop to your day. It's those small personal touches that make your wedding day unique and they will be the things that bring back the memories 10 years after you say I do.

So try to imagine your wedding as a photographer:
do the colors compliment each other? Is the flower arrangement photography-ready? What time of day did you choose for your wedding and how does it match with your outfits?

What about the weather? The seasons in Hawaii change dramatically from summer to winter.... believe it or not.
For instance, depending on which side of the island you are on you may see sunshine all day or be rained on.

Winter months tend to be wet and windy, you will want to avoid the north and eastern shores of all the island for an outdoor wedding.
Summer months can be very hot and dry especially on the south and western shores of our island home. Consider an indoor venue or a late day wedding to avoid cooking your tuxedo wearing groom and all your guests.

Your photographer will be able to work with any scenario if they are worth their salt. They will also help advise you on when and where to get the best light for your day. The best Hawaii wedding photographers will help you to picture everything as an artistic photograph, making your decisions easy. Remember, Hawaii is a amazing place, but it is only part of the total elements of a wedding.

  • Getting the right venue. There are lots of couples who aren’t natives of Hawaii, but come to the island of Oahu for a small wedding ceremony with their loved ones in a garden or on the beach.

However, intimate elegant or DIY weddings aren’t necessarily cheap. You may need to budget to rent out a ballroom, private estate or even a yacht to entertain your guests after the nuptials.  Depending on where you hold your wedding there may be permits or special permissions necessary for you to actually hold a ceremony or a party. The options are countless here so make sure you get the right one to fit your timeline and your budget.

professional albums and design for your weddingwedding productsevery bride wants to remember her wedding this is how it's done

  • Splurge on photography.  This is the best thing you can do for your wedding, as well as for other important events in your life. A modern wedding in Hawaii or anywhere includes quality photography.  The old story goes, flowers fade, the cake is eaten and the guests all go home. Your photos will be passed on to your children and grand children. They are worth the time and the money.
  • If you’ve decided on a DIY wedding, it doesn’t mean you’ll also have to take care of the photography yourself or ask your uncle with a great camera to do it. Leave your wedding photography to the pros, their experience is invaluable. As artists you who have seen and photographed more weddings than any uncle has been invited to, they will help you remember this day forever. Same goes for the elegant wedding; even if you don’t have many guests, it doesn’t mean you don’t need professional photography to remember it always.

All that being said, when you’re saying “wedding”, you’re also saying “photography”. Even if you don’t like traditional ceremonies, you shouldn’t neglect the importance of the memories that are captured forever through professional photography. As a modern bride your wedding will be so inventive and ingeniously designed that, it actually deserves more to be captured forever by professionals who know how to capture the spirit of your modern wedding in Hawaii.

Hawaii has a lot to offer couples who want to have a modern wedding: accessibility, blue skies, crystalline waters, magical and inspiring scenery – all waiting to be committed to your memory with flawless photography.

Hawaii Wedding Photography Packages https://hawaiianpix.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/3/hawaii-wedding-photography-packages Bride and Groom In HawaiiSunset Wedding HawaiiNorth Shore Beach Wedding Oahu Hawaii Though Hawaii is small, its stunning natural beauty and popularity as a wedding destination have created a booming photography market. Honolulu alone boasts over 400 of the best photographers in Hawaii. Dive into that market, and you will discover a world of talented wedding photographers, as colorful and teeming with life as one of Oahu’s coral reefs. With such an abundance of talent, selecting the right photographer for your wedding can be difficult. A great starting place is to compare the wedding photography packages offered by different companies, who’s wedding photo galleries meet your style. This will help sharpen the focus on your favorite companies' Hawaii photography packages, allowing you to find a photographer that will capture both the vision of your wedding in Hawaii and fit your budget. Contacting these photographers about a free consultation by phone or in person, will solidify your choice, allowing you to ask pointed questions that relate directly to your wedding plans.

What is and why should I bundle?

Photography packages are designed to maximize organization, efficiency, and cost effectiveness. When you select a Hawaiian wedding photography package, you avoid hidden fees and gain a clear, up-front outline of what you can expect from your photographer. It’s also important to note that the best wedding photographers have years of experience in making the wishes of wedding couples come true. They know the amount of time it takes to capture a wedding, the products that are sure to thrill couples, and even some perks you might not have considered, like enlarged photos or extra sessions.

Between the different wedding packages options offered by the photographers in Hawaii, the chance that you will be able to find a package thats tailor-made for you are actually pretty good!

Typical Package Features

Though the details of photography packages are as diverse as the modern weddings they capture, most packages share some core features that allow for easy comparison.

  • Hours of photography- probably the biggest variation in packages is the number of hours a photographer will be present to shoot your wedding. Generally, package options start at 1 hour of photography and extend up to 8 hours, much like your own work day. However, most photographers are used to working up to as many as 14 hours at an event. These extra hours will come at an additional charge per photographer so check on their “overtime” pricing.
  • Number of photographers- package options also vary in the number of photographers who will be present at your wedding. While multiple photographers do increase the package price, they can also be a valuable investment. Multiple photographers mean that multiple angles and different loctions can be shot at the same time. For example, a wedding with two photographers can capture both the bride and groom’s smile or a treasured moment between the parents you never seen yourself until the photographs were presented. Even the best of single photographers can’t be in two places at once.
  • Location- some photography packages are location specific. Some of Hawaii’s most pristine natural areas are also difficult to access. When selecting a package, you should check to see if your location incurs an additional expense, permit or special access. Similarly, if you plan on having multiple locations for your wedding and reception, make sure that your package includes photography at more than one location, if there are travel charges or location fees that would be involved.
  • Editing- most packages will state that editing of your wedding photos is included in the package price. However, if this is not explicitly stated, you should contact the photographer to avoid incurring an additional cost. Nothing is more deflating than a pretty photo that could have been exquisite, with just a few professional edits.
  • Printing- probably the most important yet overlooked divergence of packages is in the final, printed products they offer. Most packages offer you full rights to your wedding photos (sometimes through a DVD or direct download online),  this will allow you to print them as you please. However, the prints you make of your photos are unlikely to be as brilliant as the prints offered directly from the photographers, who use a Professional Photographic lab. Different packages offer different professional prints. Some packages include coffee table books, enlargements, professional designed albums, and various numbers of 4X6, 5X7, and 8X12 and larger wall prints. In comparing packages, you should consider not only the size, quantity, and quality of the photos you would like to keep for yourself but also the quantity and quality of photos you want to send to your loved ones.

Selecting Your Package: Some Do’s and Don’ts

Even focusing on the core features mentioned above, navigating your options can be tricky. In order to ensure that your photos are as magical and uniquely “you” as your wedding, you should always talk to  your photographer before you commit to a package.

  • Do discuss seeing product samples. If you plan on selecting a package with lots of professionally printed photos, you would be wise to make sure that your photographer is open to showing you samples of these products before they are printed. Samples will insure that your photographer is skilled in not only taking, but making beautiful final prints of your day.
  • Do discuss delivery date. Shooting a wedding is just the beginning of a photographer’s work. In order to deliver you with their best product, a photographer also has to allow time for editing and printing. You should talk about turn time for your display images online, printed proofs, albums and enlargements before committing. Your photographer should be able to give you general delivery times for all the products in your package before your wedding. Having an appointed delivery date can help satisfy photo-eager relatives or even your own nagging excitement!
  • Don’t neglect to talk about copy rights. Wedding copyright territory can feel a bit like walking by one of Hawaii’s rumbling volcanoes, if the photographer and the couple’s rights have not been outlined ahead of time. Having paid for and been the subject of the photography, it is natural that you might feel entitled to all rights to your photos. However, your photographs are actually copyrighted material under the federal copyright laws of the United States as intellectual property, much like the movies or music you love. This means that the photographer owns the full rights to the images produced. This law provides photographers the right to use your photos for advertisement or may prohibit you from posting their photos on your social media page. Because the legality of copy rights can be tricky, ask your photographer to have a discussion in laymen’s terms with you about what you will and will not be able to do with the photos once you receive them.

Additional sessions

Your wedding is sure to be a magical event, but the journey up to your wedding and your newlywed adventures are likely to include their own share of enchanting moments. In order to capture your complete story, you might want to consider booking a photographer for extra sessions, such as engagement photos or trash-the-dress shoots. Some wedding photography packages include these, and they are a fantastic addition. If your photographer doesn’t include these ask about them.

Your Hawaiian wedding photos are a window into a natural paradise and into one of your life’s most dazzling moments. Use the advice above to keep a clear head while making decisions about your photography package, and your photos will be a treasure trove of memories, for life.

Wedding Photographers In Honolulu https://hawaiianpix.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/3/wedding-photographers-in-honolulu Hawaii Wedding PhotographersHawaii Wedding Kualoa RanchHonolulu wedding photographer How do you picture your perfect wedding? Maybe it’s in Honolulu, full of laughter and joy, memorable moments forever captured by the best photographers in Hawaii. Even if you’re not a native of Honolulu, you know it has the most amazing wedding locations, with magnificent landscapes, beaches and sunsets. Honolulu is a dream both for you and your photographer. But how do you choose your wedding photographers in Honolulu? A wedding is only as flawless as the wedding-album renders it. The best photographers – in Honolulu or elsewhere – must be dedicated professionals. As such, we’ll share with you some don'ts and do's of choosing your wedding photographers.

Don’ts

  • Don’t chose a friend or relative. Or a friend if they are not proven professionals. These are possibly the worst choice for your wedding photographer. They typically don’t put you first. They may be cheap, even free, but they don’t do the quality work, you will expect from your wedding memories. This is mostly because they lack knowledge and don’t have the necessary tools. Their focusing on you, or your new spouse but not on your event or your relationship.
  • Watch out for the Newb’s. There are approximately 35.000 photographers around Honolulu, on the island of Oahu, and some of them are new to the job. They may have an expensive camera but this is just the instrument, like a painters brush. It doesn’t paint a masterpiece or even a nice picture by itself, only a trained and skilled wedding photographer can do this for you. These newbies will shoot like crazy and find in the end that they need to edit, thousands of images. As they try to do this you wait, sometimes for months just to see your final images. Generally these upstarts are full of confidence until they hit their first challenge in lighting or event snafu.  Get someone who has at least 5 years of experience in the field, either as a second shooter or as a primary. This will be your safest bet for quality images.
  • The Pro’s Know. Ok there is no denying that this IS YOUR DAY and while you are the “boss” of your wedding in Hawaii, chances are your photographers have done, seen and know more than you about their job. Sometimes it’s best to see things from their perspective, since some of their ideas may be more suitable for your wedding, and thus work better photographically. Don’t act like the only merit photographers have is holding a camera, a professional wedding photographer has likely been involved in hundreds if not thousands of weddings. Don’t waste this knowledge these trained professionals are usually as vested in your event as you are.
  • Don’t assume, ask. You have to know, is your photographer doing their job to make a living, or just as a part time hobby; if they’re willing to travel outside of Oahu or Honolulu just to accommodate your wedding venue, portraits or formal photographs; how much they’re charging for this travel, and if they’re offering discounts or payment plans for their wedding packages; if they’re working with an assistant photographer or if they plan to delegate your wedding to someone else.

Do’s

  • Check their photo galleries. This will help you get ideas from other similar weddings, and be more specific about your desires. Some photographers may even surprise you with their own fascinating thoughts. Browsing a wedding-photographers galleries will give you the best insight any photographers style, skills and abilities.
  • Inquire about different locations. The island of Oahu and by extension Honolulu, has many perfect venues for weddings and photography. Ask your photographer where they would suggest taking your wedding pictures or portraits. Ideally, the photographers should accommodate your desires, and offer a back-up plan in case something happens to the first location.
  • Be specific about your style. Some wedding photographers prefer bright lighting, and natural photos – as is often flattering to the views of Honolulu. Other photographers struggle with posing and good composition, thus relying on heavy retouching. Either way, tell the photographers exactly what you want this will go a long way to providing the wedding memories you expect.
  • Make friends. Your Hawaii photographer wants to get to know and like you.  This opens communication better, images better and can provide with a lifelong relationship of imagery between the two of you. People from Honolulu (and Hawaii in general) are renowned for their warmth and friendliness, those who have been or live here understand this first hand. Even with this fact you want to feel a connection to your photographer.
  • Take the time. See if you and your photographer have the same ideas on how a wedding should be caught on camera, schedule a consultation, which should be free and in person if possible. If a face to face isn't possible, do a phone or better Skype or Google Hangout with your potential memory maker. Take the time to really try to understand each other’s vision.

All that being said, to have your dream-wedding in Honolulu, you must first be anchored into the reality of sensible choices, and start off by selecting the topnotch photographers in Honolulu, who’ll turn your wedding memories into photos to last a lifetime.

Over the years, looking through our lens, we have come to recognize the truth behind what actually makes a person photogenic. It’s not their physical appearance, it’s the inner beauty they emit when being their true selves. Everyone has it and we all see it in the people around us every day.

As a photographer, “It’s one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it’s another thing all together, to make a portrait of who they are.” — Paul Caponigro.

As we shoot, we aim to capture that genuine happy laugh at your wedding, that person everyone becomes when they don't believe that the camera is on them. With every assignment, out photographers are looking for something special. We are looking for that inner glow that makes us fall in love with photography all over again.. As your photographer we watch, study and read mannerisms, facial expressions, anticipate emotions, and responses..... We capture all those little laughs, stolen kisses, and a couple's secret language for their lifetime of memories.
.

Anyone Can Capture A Picture, We Want More.

  • Photography of weddings & portraits is a reflection of you. It should be your natural self, the expression in a conversation between photographer and subject rather than the conversation itself.
  • Working with you, understanding who you are as a person and reaching that inner self in each of our clients is our goal.
  • We open up about ourselves as well. We let down our personal walls allowing our clients to do the same. Proven results of a relaxed portrait session or wedding is in your pictures. There is no better compliment than seeing someone smile at a photograph of themselves. Why do they smile? Because they see their inner beauty and they like what they see.

Why Do Your Subjects Look So Natural?

The challenge we face as photographers is finding the balance between making emotive, spontaneous images vs. perfectly posed, smiling pictures. When you look back at the pictures you have taken in school as a kid vs the pictures you have taken with your mobile phone, you can understand where we are coming from. As your photographer, how do we strike that balance?

  • We invite couples and families to connect by sharing personal stories, memories, hopes and desires with one another. Maybe we talk to them about a recent life event, like their trip to Hawaii maybe?
  • “Everyone is a kid, some are just bigger than others”- imaginative play, word games, songs, and stories inspire kids of every age.
  • Hawaii is a beautiful place and we are blessed to work in such an amazing environment. It sometimes makes it a little too easy, to look for elements in the frame that we can focus on to tell the story our clients in photos.
  • One of the first things we consider on any session is beautiful lighting and backgrounds.
  • We tell our clients that pre-conceived expectations and a strict attempt to adhere to them causes stress and exactly the opposite of those expectations.
  • Finally, we prepare everyone at the start to relax and be comfortable. Our job as their photographer is to take charge, allow them to be the big kids we know they all are and above all to have fun. When we give everyone the permission to be free of their daily or pre-conceived stress, immediately they enjoy our time together and without a doubt, their photographs will reflect their experience.

When you are the bride, you will want to remember all the emotions, fun, excitement, anticipation and experiences of that special day forever…

Your wedding photographs are more than just pictures of the day, they capture love, promise, memories, passion and joy. These are the images that endure, the images that you keep. These are your Hawaii wedding photographs, the once in a lifetime images you will never forget. - Aloha

Why Choose A Professional Hawaii Wedding Photographer For Your Wedding. https://hawaiianpix.zenfolio.com/blog/2016/2/why-choose-a-professional-hawaii-wedding-photographer-for-your-wedding You might have seen it before, photographs from a friend or family members' wedding in Hawaii or somewhere else, that just didn’t seem to measure up to the actual event. So you ask them, “ who did you hire to do the photographs at your your wedding in Hawaii? “ And their answer shocks you, we just had a friend with a nice camera, who was already coming to Hawaii for the wedding with us, do the pictures.

Friends don’t let friends take your wedding photographs

1) What do we pay them? , Do they expect to be paid?

2) Will they show up on time, or at all if we don't pay them?

3) Will they capture the special & iconic events of the day?

4) When will we see our wedding photos after the wedding?

5) Will or can they edit, print or make an album of the photos they take?

6) ..... And What if they totally mess up the images, will we still be friends?

We wanted to explain visually, the importance that it can make to work with a professional. These two photographs while simple and iconic appear in most weddings. This example makes it easy to see the difference it makes working with a professional photographer. An event as important as your wedding requires that it be handled by a professional. A “nice camera“ doesn’t take the photos, the photographer takes them. Without using proper photographic lighting, & posing techniques, the difference is clear. The photographs on the right, demonstrate how a professional photographer with experience would approach the same situation as a friend with a nice camera would, on the left.

You only get one chance

Choosing the right wedding photographer for your wedding is one of the highest priorities on most brides list. Here are a few things to consider when working with a photographer.

  1. Choose a proven professional photographer
    1. We’ve covered this pretty well, don’t send a plumber to do your wedding photographs.

In Hawaii there are hundreds of FULL TIME professional wedding photographers, Hawaiianpix is proud to have served over a thousand wedding clients in the last 15 years.

  1.  Ask the Hard Questions
    1. How long have you been in business?
    2. Do you have a backup if you are sick?
    3. Can you show me examples of your work from ONE wedding?
    4. Do you carry insurance ( most major wedding locations will require this)
    5. What happens if we need to reschedule?
    6. When will we see our photographs, prints, albums from the wedding?

A professional photographer will have the answers to these and many more questions, it’s your wedding, your wedding photographer should display the experience necessary to answer

  1. Plan for a little extra time
    1. Simply said the more time you have the more photographs you can get from your wedding.

Ideally for our weddings, we like to spend 30-45 minutes with the couple alone. This is after the family formals. It is all about your first photos as a “married “ couple, very romantic.

  1. Most weddings in Honolulu or anywhere in Hawaii are done at least partly outdoors.

Plan a stop or location for a photo shoot, usually on the way from the church to the reception venue. We always have a plan for taking photographs and visit locations before the wedding day and do our homework. This helps save our clients' time on the wedding day, allowing you to make the most of it.

Wedding photography is about capturing one of the most important days of your life. Be properly prepared, hire a pro and have fun while shooting. Enjoy your wedding knowing that on the day you’ve chosen to be one of your happiest and most memorable, you will have the photographs to prove it.
